This is a story of raw courage about brave men who drove their tanks straight through the gates of Hell and received presidential citations from two countries. They were attached to the 35th Infantry Division during this action in Normandy.

Brigadier General Paul W Baade ordered the tank battalion not to leave a small narrow road leading to its assigned objective. Apparently the commanding general hadn’t learned or understood Patton’s tactics of fire and maneuver, or the military situation left him no other choice. But his order created a disaster, in terms of casualties and destroyed materiel.
